Baby signing for beginners

Research has shown that using sign language to communicate with pre-lingual babies and young children allows them to share their feelings and thoughts with their carers long before they are able to use speech. This is due to the muscles in a child’s hand developing before those that enable them to speak.  In practice continued use has shown that the child’s ability to learn may be enhanced through using this total communication approach. This course is for practitioners who want to start communicating with babies and young children using signs sourced directly from British Sign Language.

  • To explore the benefits of using sign language with all babies and young children, both hearing and deaf.
  • To build a vocabulary of essential everyday signs that can be used in the working environment.
  • To use signed songs and nursery rhymes effectively to support the learning process for both carer and child.
  • To consolidate participant’s knowledge and competency of confidently using Sign Language in practical situations to support and enhance total communication with babies & young children.
